Artist, eternal optimist. I'm young. I'm alive. All these things make me smile. Sometimes I use this space to shamelessly indulge in my musings.

[Flash 10 is required to watch video]

Instead of resting when I’m not feeling 110% I sit in bed with my guitar and do stuff like this.

Once all the hubub in my life settles down and I’m comfy in my new place I’m going to record a more pristine version of this song for my youtube account. One where I’m warmed up and not congested. :)

This is probably my favorite type of chain to repair. These, & herringbone. They’re more challenging than a lot of the other repairs that come through here. (Taken with instagram)

Top 101 Independent Book Publishing Companies/ Contemplations, revised goals for the future, and some light ramblings on a digital page.

Here’s the list.

I may very well continue to pursue a career dominantly as a metalsmith, however I  cannot deny my feelings for graphic design. After toying with the idea for…years, to be frank, I feel that if I decide to return full-fledged to graphic design I would really love to work for a book publishing company. Look at my portfolio. It only makes sense. The majority of my work over the years (college level and beyond) has focused predominantly on book design/type management for mass quantities of text/experimental typography. I love to read. I love typography. And I feel like the printed page possesses an intrinsic value that will never die. It only makes sense to transform this belief into a career, doesn’t it? This is something I’ve been thinking about since the Spring semester of 2009. After graduating, I freelanced for a time, then my focus shifted to metalwork, dominantly. This year, I took on a project designing a logo and a small identity system for a friend, and as a result of which I’m realizing how without design, I feel incomplete. The same can also definitely be said of my metalwork…

This ongoing struggle of design versus metalwork need not go on, because I can have it all, I’ve realized. Further down the road, I can work as a metalsmith from home as I design for a publishing company by day. My focus has realigned itself ever so slightly to make more room for each love. And I’m eager to see if I can do it. What am I saying? I know darn well that I can do it. It’s just a matter of finding that niche for myself where I can flourish professionally and personally.

As it stands currently, graduate school is a little out of my price range, as much as I would adore returning for my MFA. Honestly, I’m not fully convinced that more schooling is the thing that’s truly best for me at this point in time. Not just due to financial reasons. Sure, furthering my education might increase the likelihood of finding work in the field of my choosing, but it may not. “The economy, the economy, yadda, yadda, yadda…” Determination, drive, instinct, and talent also play significant roles in the ability to land the job that I want. And I want this…

There are a few things that must be tended to before I can leap. A damn license for one. A vehicle, second. I’d also like to redo my graphic design portfolio. I’m very happy to say that this is a process that has already begun. Over the past month and a half I’ve meticulously re-photographed all of my design work from college, in addition to any freelance work and commissions I’ve undertaken since graduating. Now I’m onto the tedious task of retouching, reprinting, and reassembling board after board for my briefcase portfolio, and creating once and for all a cohesive personal website containing all of my design work. Even my metalwork. Something streamlined, well organized, and clean. Something that houses everything I’ve done as both a graphic designer and metalsmith.

Philadelphia, New York City, Austin, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Baltimore, Sante Fe, Palo Alto, Seattle, Ann Arbor, Minneapolis, Boston, Carlsbad, Chicago, Beverly Hills, Tallahassee, Atlanta: All cities in which publishing companies reside. And there are plenty more out there. To research each city and each company will be another important task as I continue plugging away at my portfolio.

First, to move into my new place.

One thing at a time.

I’ll admit that everything all at once has been a bit exhausting for me lately. For instance, it’s 8:00pm and I’m ready for bed. I’m normally awake until nearly 1 in the morning.

One thing at a time.
